GREAT IFE STUDENTS’ UNION
PETITION ON THE CULT ATTACK  AND KILLING OF NOVEMBER 30 IN THE UNIVERSITY NEW BUKATERIA OF THE OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY, ILE-IFE
04/12/17
The macabre attack that took place on the soil of our campus on the 30th November 2017 is by no means an incident that we as students can afford to overlook as it stands blatantly as an omen of rising blood-shed and morbidity on our campus if immediate and preemptory action is delayed in combating this trend of wanton menace in the confines and environs of our campus.
On the aforementioned date, an individual by the name Olufemi Omogboriowo was brutally stabbed to death by a neo-fascist group in the university New Bukateria with dangerous weapons brought into the campus with them. The victim of this murder sustained a head wound which showed that the weapon of assault was not a random item that was obtainable in the surroundings of the murder scene. These elements were conveyed in a white saloon car into the university through the school gate, which is supposed to be one of the strongholds of campus security, without thorough screening. It should be noted at this point that events such as these are heretofore, that is, until the beginning of the Prof. Ogunbodede’s vice-chancellorship, alien and unheard-of in the history of the university community since the gory happenings of July 10, 1999.
The killing that occurred on the night of November 30 is only the necessary result of the criminal silence of the university administration on the cultist insurgence that occurred on November 1 to which the university administration did not only ignore but also obviated in the media by saying it was a mere friendly fight. This obviously points to the university management as the number one promoter of cultism and neo-fascist violence on our campus, besides the suspension of Students’ union activities has further worsened the status of students’ security on campus. It is rather unfortunate that nearly four (4) days of the murder of Omogboriowo Femi, the university management has refused to make any official release on the gory occurrence, the Vice Chancellor has remained muted.
As ominous as the situation is on our campus for the students, it goes without saying that the security of the staff, traders and visitors of the university is at stake as they will not be spared from the Armageddon that threatens to destroy the peaceful academic, social and otherwise proceedings on our campus because in the absence of vibrant students’ union, students will begin to seek for means of fortification leaving the students prone to recruitment by the rising neo-fascist groups thereby transforming our campus to an arena of incessant and morbid feuds among neo-fascist confraternities.
We hereby use this medium to call attention of the staff unions towards the draconian measures of the university vice-chancellor to clamp down on vibrant students’ union which has tolerated no cult-like activities on campus but the absence of this now gives room to the alarming spate of cultism on our campus as their complacence can only borne peril for both students and staff. It is worth mentioning that students are no longer safe in the hands of these neo fascist elements as they have been emboldened by the pronouncement made by university administration that the union activities are being suspended.
Worse still is the fact that these murderous culprits are still at large as we speak due to the ineptitude of the university security team which have always been apt to molest and harass student activists, union leaders rather than working with them to ensure that our campus is safe of cultism. By letting these elements escape without arrest, it has once and for all confirmed the veracity of students’ agitations that only a vibrant students union can inhibit and retard the growth of cultism our campus but alas Great Ife students’ unionism is under attack of the university administration for no reason at all.
In conclusion, we the students of Obafemi Awolowo University hereby demand the immediate and unconditional reinstatement of the union activities knowing fully well that this is the only nostrum to the terminal illness of the peace and safety on campus. We also call on the Nigerian police force and the university security team to, without hesitation; begin intense investigation into the issue and to bring the perpetrators of this evil to justice.
We once again reiterate and sound that without our union fully in operation, the campus is no longer safe for us as students and the entire university community.
